08.17.2010 (Tuesday) * Day unknown

Hello All-
Been a while! Bet you think I forgot about all of you; fat chance! I am still here, getting older everyday. I am still hanging in my Sebastopol foster home; waiting for the BIG day when I go to a forever home!
I am just as happy and energetic as ever. The tail never stops going and I have lots of other dogs to play with. I have a big crate to eat in and stay in if Robert needs to run an errand. I have an even a bigger crate to sleep in, which I do without any problems.
I still have yet to catch one of those pesky gophers, but it is not for lack of trying. The other day I spied a chicken (neighbor's) in the horse pasture area. Robert spoiled my fun by rescuing it before I could investigate (that's twice now, once with the duck and now the chicken!). I even stopped to point it!
Robert was gone for a while and I missed him; he is a good buddy, especially compared to his wife (oh, that ought to get him in the doghouse along with me! lol). I have not gone off wandering on my own ever since Madame X (Maddie) went to a new foster home. It just is not the same running off on your own....
I am really enjoying what it is to be loved! I never knew life could be so good. I am not chained up all day. I spend most of my time in the house. I come and go outside at will and am never really crated for more than an hour or two; and I always get cookies for being good. I watch TV on weekends with Nancy and she sits on the floor with me 'cuz I don't get on the couch or chairs.
I still don't let Robert do my nails but he can check my mouth, examine my body, clean my ears and treat any injuries I get; maybe in time! I love to lay on a cushion by his side when he works on the computer because he can lean over and rub my tummy, which I like a lot!
The weather has been really nice, cool and foggy in the morning and sunny and warm (not hot) in the afternoon. The evenings are cool and pleasant. I am so thankful to be out of that shelter in Fairfield. Now, if someone would just adopt me!
Thanks all for following my blog and looking out for me! Robert has been very busy with projects and school (advanced nuclear weapons technology for personal use).
I love all of you!
Send me a comment or two!

06.27.2010 (Sunday) * Day 30

Hello all! Well, here it is, a full month I've been in foster and not a single inquiry about me. How sad is that?

I am doing very well here; getting along with the other dogs but I do bug Rothko, the other foster dog, a bit. What I really need is one or two children to play with me and let me chase them, or them me. I love kids and I can keep up with their energy level. I have been keeping busy chasing balls, and kongs and chew toys and birds. When I get too warm, I just come in and lie on the floor in front of the new screen door Robert installed just for us. Sometimes I lie in front of a fan or on a dog bed in the kitchen; whatever suits my mood.

06.15.2010 (Tuesday) * Day 18

Greetings all! And a special thanks to Rita for joining my blog as a follower.

Was a very warm day here on Sunday (the 13th) though a late afternoon breeze made for a comfortable evening. Nancy arrived here about 3:30pm with all kinds of goodies that Tommy won at the VCNC Specialty Dog Show. Gracie had a couple of new toys in tow that I'd have liked to get my mouth on, but no such luck.

Robert was gone most of the day on Monday at a dental appointment in San Jose so Rothko and I did our best to drive her crazy (it worked!). Robert got home around 3:00 and we all went berserk greeting him. It was a warm day, but still a bit cooler than Sunday. I think summer has arrived at last.

Nancy and Gracie went back to San Jose this morning so things are pretty much back to the status quo here with just Rothko, myself, Dolly and Phoenix.

We had a bit of excitement tonight when a wild female duck flew into the horse pasture, qucking wildly, then flew off to the pasture next door. Minutes later she was back in the pasture calling wildly (for her date/mate?). Suddenly, out of nowhere comes a male duck who missed his approach into the horse pasture and make a steeply banked short approach into the dog yard! Well, this did not have the makings of a happy ending... Robert went out to watch to see if he would fly off again before trouble ensued...no such luck. Phoenix, Rothko and I spied the duck and Phoenix decided it was going to be dessert. I sort of joined in and Rothko to some extent (the pack mentality overwhelmed me). Robert rushed in to break up the squabble but had his hands full with the very persistent Phoenix and myself. The duck, who later was identified as FAD (decode that name yet?) or his sidekick (unnamed), was too winded to fly out of the dog yard. Fortunately, Dolly (aka, the weasel killer) did not make an appearance or the duck would be soup by now. The duck was really stressed and not at all cooperative with Robert in letting himself be rescued. Finally, after several charges by Phoenix and a couple of fly-bys by myself, the duck concluded that it was better off being captured by Robert than being left to the dogs (literally). Robert picked him up and carried him across the dog yard held aloft over his head so we could not jump and attack him. The horses were all in their stalls eating but had come out into their paddocks to see what all the shouting was over. Needless to say, they all went nuts seeing Robert carrying this terrified duck over his head approaching the gate leading to the horse pasture where the duck could safely beat a hasty retreat. Once in the horse pasture, the duck wasted no time in scurrying up the driveway to its home. And the female duck? Well she left in the midst of the fracas and was nowhere to be found. I guess this meant no date, no hookup or no FAD as the case might have been... The joys of country living. The question is, will the duck be back? Did it learn anything? Time will tell....

For our next interaction with wildlife I will be reporting on the baby owl status after observing them tonight...stay tuned.

06.12.2010 (Saturday) * Day 15

Good evening to all!

It has been couple of days since my last post, but a lot has not changed with me. I am doing well, eating just fine after being switched over to a new dog food. I am a quiet sleeper, secure in my crate next to the bed. Rothko is the same way, though his crate is the size of the Playboy mansion!
Dolly and Phoenix sleep with Robert or in another bedroom. It has been pretty warm here so the windows are open and the fans are a twirlin'.

Robert has been doing lots of yard work; mowing, weed whacking, moving piles of manure and fixing equipment as it breaks down. The other day it was one of the four weed whackers which got fixed today. The lawn tractor has been misbehaving and needs a valve adjustment; possibly more.

Our visiting duck, who appears on schedule like clockwork, has a name. It is FAD. This is a G-rated blog and I cannot tell you what it stands for; use your imagination. He comes in the morning and evening. Robert had to put up some protection for the budding asparagus; FAD likes to walk through the asparagus bed on his way to the horse pasture.

The horses are on Robert's S**t list; they decided to run through the electric tape fence while it was off so Robert could consolidate the manure pile. There are several broken fence poles; always something....

Nancy is due home tomorrow from the VCNC Specialty dog show. Gracie will be here so there will be one more vizsla in the mix.

The mother owl has been busy sitting on her nest in the owl box and she and her mate are busy hunting every night. I am not sure what is going on; I cannot hear the babies but they certainly should have been hatched by now. I will have to get the big ladder out and take a peek; just don't want mom charging out of the box with talons exposed ready to attack me 15' up in the air! It is bad enough when the chicks get all pissy and hissy when I look in; but they are defenseless; all talk and no bite!

That is about it for me; wish I had more to share about myself (and less about Robert).

If you want a sweet loving dog, great with kids and devoted to humans, think about me. Yes, I know I am a mixed breed, but I had nothing to do with that! Give Cooter a chance!

Peace, brothers and sisters...

06.09.2010 (Wednesday) * Day 12

Hello all from Sebastopol, location of my foster home!

Not much new today. Robert did a bunch of yard work, weed whacking and mowing. I am pretty used to the noise now. The backyard is mowed really short and the weeds by the fence are gone. Makes it really easy to see where I (and the others) do our business, as well as where the gophers are active. The berry vines under the deck are gone and I can now lie in the shade of the deck without having to do battle with berry stickers. Robert looks like he was attacked by a cat after pulling the berry vines out by their roots under the deck. I mean, WTF, the guy wears shorts and a tee-shirt to do everything! I like to lick the blood from his legs after he comes in from a day of weed whacking! Who needs to be rescued here?

The duck, FAD (can you guess what it stands for?) makes his usual morning and evening visit. What a quack (pun intended)! He does nothing for me but the others here go ballistic. He is totally non-plus about just about everything, including the lawn tractor, which is sounding rather poorly as of late (do I hear engine overhaul?). About the furthest he can fly is 15' at a maximum altitude of 3 feet. Guess at least he does not need airspace clearance for that!

The pipe on the well's pressure tank broke this evening and Robert was out there till 7:30pm depriving Week's Drilling and Wells of an after-hours call. The guy is amazing; a McGuyver (sp?) in his own right; and he can cook, clean, iron and sew as well. Hmmm, no wonder Nancy keeps him around.

That is about it. We are all doing fine. Nancy and Gracie will be home Sunday night. I like her! She is tough but I like a stern woman (female domination!). She reminds me of my mother when I was a pup; put me on my back and grab me by the throat. I have SUBMISSIVE down pat! I am truly a sweet lover boy, asleep on a dog bed next to Robert while he does my typing for me.

Take care, dog bless and we will blog again tomorrow.

06.08.2010 (Tuesday) * Day 11

Good evening friends, followers and visitors!

What an amazing day I had!

First, I got over my fear of the John Deere lawn tractor. That may not seem like earth shattering news to you but it was well received by Robert. Apparently, mowing two acres with a dog trying to bite the rear tires is NOT an easy task. I don't know why I am OK with it now, but perhaps it is because it does not bother any of the other dogs. I mean, Phoenix likes to ride in Robert's lap while he mows! Of course, Phoenix is a bit out on the ledge but if you tell him I said that I'll pee in your shoes.

Secondly, I have discovered birds! Any birds; crows, vultures, blackbirds, robins, swallows, finches, quail, ducks...it doesn't matter. I don't care if they are on the ground or 200 feet in the air! I chase after them with glee, leaping into the air like Super Fly and with the biggest smile on my face you could ever imagine! Where have they been all my life? I have to be careful when I run while I am looking up into the sky after a flying specimen so I don't strain (as in go through a strainer or sieve) myself going through the horse fence at full bore! Wow, I am SO happy chasing them!

Finally, I have discovered gophers, or rather their holes! There are a million of them around and I sniff each and every one of them for recent activity; but I DON'T dig them up like Rothko. Robert watches me carefully in the event I find a "hot spot". Then it is SNIPER time for him! Think of Tom Berringer as a pudgy 58 year old (lol)!

Does life get any better.? If only Robert had a Kodak Zi8 so he could video me with my big smile while I chase the birds; you'd adopt me in a heartbeat!

Life is good! Thanks for visiting and Dog Bless!

06.07.2010 (Monday) * Day 10

Special THANKS to Bill, Elizabeth and Nancy for following my site!

Greetings from my foster home. Another beautiful day here. Gracie, a resident vizsla, returned to San Jose with Nancy this morning so I have the top of the crates all to myself. Sometimes Phoenix joins me. We keep watch for the wandering duck from the neighbor's property above and sound the alarm when we see it.

I watched Robert work on the garden, changing irrigation lines and installing a new watering station. He also transplanted some lima beans and fertilized the corn. I can supervise him from the deck, so I do. I promised Nancy I'd keep an eye on him.

I am getting along with everyone and have settled into a very comfortable routine. I still get a little wiggy if Robert leaves but having the other dogs for company helps; and Robert always seems to return after a short while.

Still no prospective adoptive parents; that makes me kind of in purgatory, neither heaven or hell, but Robert and Nancy are great guardian angels (I myself am dognostic, believing in a greater canine power!).

Take care and dog bless, till tomorrow.

06.06.2010 (Sunday) * Day 9

Good evening America! -

It was warm today! I went out with the horses early and came back inside to sit in front of a fan. I really like to lie in the kitchen and be underfoot as much as possible; love my humans!

Robert was busy mowing the horse pasture and splitting wood. Nan was washing, cleaning, going to the store, baking and cooking; boundless energy! No garden work today; always tomorrow.

The visiting duck came by tonight and Rothko and Phoenix barked at him; I just say live and let live.

Tomorrow Gracie goes home with Nan and it will just be the four of us here. I will have the top of the crates ALL TO MYSELF! Yippee Cayee!

I am still waiting for my blog followers to sign up and comment; also waiting for someone to recognize what a devoted gem of a dog I am and want to adopt me!

Until tomorrow, I am yours faithfully! Cooter

06.05.2010 (Saturday) * Day 8

WOW! Here it is, an entire week since I was rescued and I have NO comments on my blog! WTF gives? Also, while we are on the subject, how is it that none of you have expressed an interest in me? I am just about the sweetest guy you will ever meet!

Today was pretty warm. We all went out with the horses early before the real heat set in. I got my first taste of watermelon today; very refreshing and yummy on a warm day like today. Most of the day I spent supervising Nancy's planting of asparagus, lima beans, squash and snap peas. Robert split some firewood and stacked it in one of the wood racks. With all the rain we have had everything is growing like mad and keeping the vegetation in check requires near constant attention. I like it when Robert pulls weeds in the backyard but I do not like the lawn tractor, so he usually mows the rear yard while I am crated for dinner. I like to go out and roll in the clippings when he is done, though.

After dinner I like to stay up late with Nancy while she watches TV or works on her computer. Then we all head off to bed and put another day behind us.

06.04.2010 (Friday) * Day 7

Hello readers! Just another day here with all my friends. Very strange weather this morning; light rain/heavy mist, gray and dreary. I spent most of the morning inside staying dry. I am apparently not a big fan of wet weather. Fortunately, the gray sky and wet weather gave way to blue sky and sun this afternoon, so the day was not a total bust.

I finally got to meet Nancy this afternoon and another resident vizsla, Gracie. She is pretty sweet. I didn't know that my favorite place on top of the dog crates near the kitchen window is really Gracie's spot. Fortunately, she has let me join her so long as I behave and don't make a pest of myself; if I do, she quickly sets me straight!

After dinner I like to lay on a big (Costco) dog bed in the living room and watch TV with Nancy and the other dogs.

06.03.2010 * Day 6

Good evening followers and visitors-

Day 4 and I'm still here? I like totally expected to be adopted by now, dude; WTF, do I have cooties or something?

It was a muggy, warm, sticky day here in Sebastopol. I think I have the routine down REALLY pat. Wake up, get out of my crate to go outside and relieve myself, hop around the kitchen while Robert prepares breakfast, RUSH into my crate to eat it and afterwards, go out in the horse pasture to romp and run, while Robert tends to the horses. Those guys are SO big I do not even get close to them. After the horse tending we return to the rear yard or inside for whatever suits our fancy; a nap on a bed, a sunbath on the deck, a roll on the lawn or a hop into the water tub. I usually opt for a nap on a bed or on top of the crates by the kitchen window so I can peruse my kingdom. One never knows when I may need to sound the ALERT due to a roaming duck or inquisitive quail. The others here get really cranked up over the postperson, the UPS driver or FedEx; I don't see the big deal. They all seem pretty nice and innocuous to me; but what do I know?

Robert did a lot of weed whacking today. He has one mean blade on that thing (he has four of them). He really improved my view and I love it! I especially liked it when the 4 1/2 foot long gopher snake came out of the weeds and said, enough is enough! Robert took a picture and then moved him/her off to a safe place. The battle against overgrown vegetation is pretty constant here in the country. The visiting duck from the neighbor above made his usual appearance this evening. He seems like such a lost soul; waddles everywhere, and only has two speeds, slow and slower!

My foster mom was supposed to be here tonight but she got delayed until tomorrow after having to do a stint as Josephine, the plumber, to repair a leaky hot water recirculation line. What did we do before cell phones with cameras and the Internet? She will be here tomorrow with a resident vizsla (Gracie) I have not met, but whom I understand owns the entire top of the crates in the kitchen on which I so dearly like to lie. This is going to be an interesting weekend!

I cannot tell you how easy it has been to acclimate here. Everyone is so nice and supportive. I am enjoying myself and causing no problems; why ruin a good thing? But somehow I know this is only temporary, and I want COMMITMENT! Isn't there someone out there who wants a sweet devoted companion such as myself. I may not be purebred but I make up for it in spades with my undying devotion and love!

Peace baby! (Isn't that what Telly Savales used to say?) Am I dating myself or what?

06.02.2010 * Day 5

Hello again fans, followers and vizsla lovers. Thanks for dropping by.

I went to the vet today for my official "pre-adoption" exam. What a fun place! All kinds of smells, people (I love people), cookies and ATTENTION! Man, was I ever excited. I could hardly contain myself. My ears are clean as a whistle (are whistles really clean, I mean, all that saliva and such?), my heart is good, my lungs are clear and I am heartworm negative. The good doctor looked at my broken canine (from that nasty Labrador that attacked me when I was young) and felt it should not bother me for the rest of my life and pose no health issues. In the interest of full disclosure (damn you sue-happy lawyers) I do have a small scar on the cornea of my right eye. It does not affect my vision at all and poses no health issue for me in the future. Its source is anybody's guess. I was going to get my nails trimmed (they are pretty short, but could use a touch up) but I was so EXCITED and HAPPY to see people that paid attention to me that it was impossible to trim them. My foster parents and I are going to work something out in this matter.

After the vet visit, I went with Robert to the bank; was a fun ride, but I had to stay in the car while he made a deposit. I think not allowing me in the bank is rather discriminatory, don't you? Any of you sue-happy lawyers I insulted earlier in this post want to take this case, pro bono? HeeHee! (Boy am I happy I can type and surf the web...)

After the bank we went to the local feed store. I thought I died and went to heaven; food everywhere, toys everywhere, people everywhere, dogs, chickens, cats, you name it! The sales girl that greeted me out front as I came in noticed how absolutely excited I was and how I pulled on my leash (could use some work there since nobody ever took me for a walk). After we entered the store she came over with a halter and fit it to me for a live test. What a difference! I acted like a dog totally under control (I was). We picked up dog food for the senior vizslas at home, some beet pulp for the horses (those are REALLY big furries) and some new tennis balls for the other rescue at home, Rothko. The tennis balls are oversize, blue and orange and REALLY cool. I met another rescue dog, a female cattle dog, that I had a really nice time smelling. She was cute and very friendly to me, as I was to her (Miss Manners would be proud of me). We got along just fine but as I understood it from her owner, she has a bit of an aggression issue with people. Oh well, nobody is perfect. Well, maybe me and my foster parents (lol). I really liked the feed center; got lots of cookies and pets and attention from the staff. The harness that the sales girl test fit for me worked so well, my foster dad purchased it ( I wonder if he is addicted to the Shopping Channel?). All in all, a really fun day!

So, here I am. All tuned up and totally refurbished! If I were on a used car lot, I'd be the pristine sport coupe that was only driven to church on Sundays by a little old lady. I even come complete with a free 6-month supply of HeartGuard Plus and a 30-day money back guarantee, no questions asked.

Wanna take me for a test spin?

06.01.2010 * Day 4

Hello Vizsla lovers!

OK, here is the poop (no pun intended).
I may not have a vizsla coat, I may not have a vizsla tail, though what I have is most EXCELLENT for clearing coffee table height units, albeit not gracefully. And yes, sometimes my tail has a mind of its own; well, it is about as far from my brain as possible so I suspect many neurons get lost along the way. I may have lots of white in addition to my vizsla colored fur as well. But what I do have is the absolute perfect vizsla "velcro" attribute! I LOVE my humans; I can't get enough of them! They are the world to me...

Furthermore, why we are on the subject of moir, I do not counter surf. I do not get into the garbage. I do not drink out of the toilet, lift the lid or unravel the toilet tissue. I do not steal socks, shoes or underwear. I eat in my crate. I sleep in a crate, though if I wanted, I could sleep in a bed here. I do not get on the furniture, though here it is fine; the dogs own the furniture here and the humans are allowed on it only on a "standby" basis, room permitting. And if a dog wants up, and a human is occupying a position, then guess who gets bumped? And no, there is no compensation; this is not Vizsla Air! I do not dig up the gopher holes in the yard, even if Robert picks one off with his $3500 Olympic model compressed air rifle. I am not a CSI investigator; he shoots 'em, he recovers the remains...Guess I can't be a cadaver dog then (what a shame!). I don't bark very much at all. And my bark is more like an anemic squeal, undoubtedly from a long history of barking such that I damaged my vocal cords. I love to run and be chased, particularly by young children. My only special toy is "big rocks" I find and collect, but have yet to do so at my foster home (info provided by prior owner). The human here went to the rental store to see if he could rent a young child for a month or two, but alas, they referred him to the orphanage which offered only very long-term leases. I am not a fussy eater, though I do not like asparagus, yet (everyone else here does...though it does make their pee smell...). I don't bark at the horses or chase birds. A duck came into the yard tonight and I could have cared less. What I really like to do is lay on a nice, soft, plush dog bed next to Robert while he works on the computer; and when he gets up, I need to follow him, EVERYWHERE, like velcro I am attached to him (or you if you were to adopt me).

I am just about the sweetest, most gentle and loving boy you could ever hope to have love you.

Wouldn't you like to get to know me better?

05.31.2010 - Day 3

I am settling in nicely. I sleep in a crate and do not fuss or bark, unlike another certain resident vizsla here. I do my business regularly outside. I eagerly "kennel up" into a crate for breakfast and dinner. I am not a picky eater. I "sit'", "down", and "on your side" on command. I love to be pet and lay on my back while being groomed. I am a very happy boy.

Tomorrow I get to be introduced to Rothko, the other foster vizsla here. He is most handsome and seems like a really nice guy. I like to run in the horse pasture and I have yet to "learn" the habit of eating horse poop, like all the other dogs do. I love it when the human chases me around; could out-run him on two legs...poor guy. I am supposed to go to the vet tomorrow for a check-up so we will see how that goes. The county shelter vet said I was "wiggly"; obviously, he did not know how to properly examine me. Robert just has me lie on my back and goes over every inch of me with a fine toothed comb; who the hell knows what he is looking for! I don't mind! It feels good and I trust him; he has that sweet, trustable face....

I cannot tell you how happy I am to be out of the shelter. All I want in life is to be loved, to be your "special boy" and to love you in return with every breath I take!

05.30.2010 - Day 2

My first night here was spent in a crate next to Robert's bed; no problems. We get up whenever Dolly, a resident vizsla decides, usually early. I go out and do my business and then return to the kitchen where I eat in a crate. After everyone has eaten and Robert has his caffeine fix, we go outside to run in the horse pasture while he tends to the horses. I had lots of fun running and made no attempt to escape (now why would I do that?). After the horses are done, we all return to the backyard and do our own things. I have not shown any interest in balls or toys yet, mainly I like to just explore all the smells or come inside and nap on the dog bed next to Robert while he reads his email or up on the crates looking out the kitchen window where I can see just about everything.

I have not yet been introduced to Rothko, the other foster dog here, but I have seen him and he looks like a nice guy. We rotate turns being separated until Robert introduces us and we show him we are OK with one another. When I am loose I can come and go at will; there is an open sliding glass door with a screen covering which allows me to go through without assistance. The door leads onto the deck overlooking the rear yard and there are steps down to the yard. It is a big yard and there is lots of room to run and explore.

I spend my day playing and napping. Dinnertime is pretty much like breakfast. We all in in crates and then we go outside to help with the horses. Then it is back into the rear yard or house. Sometimes we watch a movie before we go to bed. I could get used to a life like this with someone who loved having me around...

05.29.2010 - Rescued!

Today is a new beginning for me. I was rescued from the Solano County Animal Shelter this morning by Robert, a really nice guy from VCNC Rescue Ops; not a moment too soon. I was in the shelter since 03.30.2010. Shortly after being evaluated, I was neutered but then I started showing signs of kennel cough so I was in the sick ward for a while. After I recovered I was made available for adoption but nobody wanted me; how sad is that? I am a playful, sweet boy.

So here I am in a foster home with one other foster dog and four (4) full time resident dogs; can be pretty crazy here at times. I have to be frank, I wouldn't mind being the only dog for a family with a couple of kids and a stay-at-home mom or dad. One or two small dogs would be fine as well; I used to live with two small dogs and believe me, they ruled the roost! I loved to play with the kids!
I don't know what a cat is so I'd probably have to become accustomed to it. I have only been here about six hours so I have yet to show my real nature. I don't really bark very much, and the bark I do have is rather anemic, perhaps as a result of barking too much in the past. I do like to howl (along with the rest of the neighborhood dogs) when I hear a fire engine or police siren. I LOVE to run in this BIG yard; saw my first horses and have not exhibited any undesirable behavior so far.... Right now I am up on a dog bed on top of some crates in the kitchen. I have a really nice kennel outside but I'd much rather be inside near Robert. I eat in a crate without any fuss and I took a nap this afternoon in a crate while Robert lay on a dog bed outside my crate. Tonight I will sleep in a crate in the bedroom next to the bed. It is nice to have so much attention; isn't that what we vizslas crave?

Goodnight to you all and if you read this and know of someone who would love me, please refer them to my blog.
