Greetings all! And a special thanks to Rita for joining my blog as a follower.
Was a very warm day here on Sunday (the 13th) though a late afternoon breeze made for a comfortable evening. Nancy arrived here about 3:30pm with all kinds of goodies that Tommy won at the VCNC Specialty Dog Show. Gracie had a couple of new toys in tow that I'd have liked to get my mouth on, but no such luck.
Robert was gone most of the day on Monday at a dental appointment in San Jose so Rothko and I did our best to drive her crazy (it worked!). Robert got home around 3:00 and we all went berserk greeting him. It was a warm day, but still a bit cooler than Sunday. I think summer has arrived at last.
Nancy and Gracie went back to San Jose this morning so things are pretty much back to the status quo here with just Rothko, myself, Dolly and Phoenix.
We had a bit of excitement tonight when a wild female duck flew into the horse pasture, qucking wildly, then flew off to the pasture next door. Minutes later she was back in the pasture calling wildly (for her date/mate?). Suddenly, out of nowhere comes a male duck who missed his approach into the horse pasture and make a steeply banked short approach into the dog yard! Well, this did not have the makings of a happy ending... Robert went out to watch to see if he would fly off again before trouble ensued...no such luck. Phoenix, Rothko and I spied the duck and Phoenix decided it was going to be dessert. I sort of joined in and Rothko to some extent (the pack mentality overwhelmed me). Robert rushed in to break up the squabble but had his hands full with the very persistent Phoenix and myself. The duck, who later was identified as FAD (decode that name yet?) or his sidekick (unnamed), was too winded to fly out of the dog yard. Fortunately, Dolly (aka, the weasel killer) did not make an appearance or the duck would be soup by now. The duck was really stressed and not at all cooperative with Robert in letting himself be rescued. Finally, after several charges by Phoenix and a couple of fly-bys by myself, the duck concluded that it was better off being captured by Robert than being left to the dogs (literally). Robert picked him up and carried him across the dog yard held aloft over his head so we could not jump and attack him. The horses were all in their stalls eating but had come out into their paddocks to see what all the shouting was over. Needless to say, they all went nuts seeing Robert carrying this terrified duck over his head approaching the gate leading to the horse pasture where the duck could safely beat a hasty retreat. Once in the horse pasture, the duck wasted no time in scurrying up the driveway to its home. And the female duck? Well she left in the midst of the fracas and was nowhere to be found. I guess this meant no date, no hookup or no FAD as the case might have been... The joys of country living. The question is, will the duck be back? Did it learn anything? Time will tell....
For our next interaction with wildlife I will be reporting on the baby owl status after observing them tonight...stay tuned.
