06.27.2010 (Sunday) * Day 30

Hello all! Well, here it is, a full month I've been in foster and not a single inquiry about me. How sad is that?

I am doing very well here; getting along with the other dogs but I do bug Rothko, the other foster dog, a bit. What I really need is one or two children to play with me and let me chase them, or them me. I love kids and I can keep up with their energy level. I have been keeping busy chasing balls, and kongs and chew toys and birds. When I get too warm, I just come in and lie on the floor in front of the new screen door Robert installed just for us. Sometimes I lie in front of a fan or on a dog bed in the kitchen; whatever suits my mood.

  1. I am very saddened that there have been no inquiries regarding you, Cooter. You have so much going for you: friendly and playful.
What you have against you is so unfair:
#1. You are a mix. People think they want a purebred dog.
#2. You are six. People think they want a young dog.
Well, I have adopted several dogs from our rescue organization and I want to disabuse the adopting folks of these prejudices.
My first rescue was Sasha. She was old and somewhat deformed, and gave me two and one-half years of pure joy and love. And she was the best playmate for my Vizsla, Sunny. That's what one wants from her dog.
My second rescue was Billy Chanelle and her half-breed daughter, Big Sasha. They had been physically abused. Big Sasha adopted very well to her new safe surroundings. Billy-Chanelle got crazier as she grew more infirm from the injury she'd suffered. Both of them showered me with love. That's what you want one wants from her dog.
Now I have Sonny, aka Stockton. He's a mix, probably Vizsla and German Shorthair. He wasn't what you'd call Vizsla-beautiful when we took him -- very, very skinny and kind of mottled and with thickened orange patches and stripes in his coat, probably from his winter days on the streets. He has become quite beautiful in the two months we've had him. His coat has become sleek and glossy and quite dark with golden highlights. He looks and walks like a Vizsla and barks like a German Shorthair. He's got serious shyness issues, but when he is feeling confident, he bounces and plays like the best of them.
My point is that one never knows with a rescue -- old or young, pretty or not, purebred or mixed. Nobody will get the dog of his or her perfect expectations. One takes a chance because one wants to give a needy dog a chance for a happy life, and sometimes its more work than expected. That's what rescue is about. That's our real client base. One of them will soon step forward for you, Cooter, with your promise of devotion and fun.
